Every year, Portugal experiences a long, hot, and dry summer—a fire season—when risk is high for forest fires and certain laws are enforced. Please be aware that those who cause a fire in Portugal, even accidentally, will be subject to prosecution. Follow the following rules and guidance during hot/dry weather to remain safe.

Fire Safety

  • Do not smoke cigarettes in wild/forested areas
  • Do not use any kind of open flame in wild/forested areas; this includes disposable barbecues, candles, fireworks, and paper lanterns
  • Do not create a campfire; to do so requires al licence all year round
  • Do not drop cigarette ash/buts in Portugal; offenders are subject to fines
  • Do not dispose of ash from a fire or barbecue until it has fully cooled; use the ash buckets provided

Quinta Castanheira is equipped with sprinkler systems, and we have a large water pump for emergencies. In the unlikely event of a local forest fire, we may decide that it is wise to evacuate the property and advise guests accordingly. Best to be prepared and aware!

Portugal uses a colour-coded fire risk categorisation system, with different tiers relating to different legal obligations. The current fire risk can be viewed at:

In Case of Fire

If a fire starts nearby, it is essential to call the emergency services immediately. Fire can spread quickly in this environment and every second counts. Our local fire station is in Santa Comba Dão, equipped with off-road fire trucks and helicopters. They welcome visitors, and have resident parrots!

Donations

supporting the fire service

During particularly intense high-risk periods, is it customary in Portugal to donate small water bottles and snacks to the local fire station. If you’d like to contribute, let us know!
